Suggested changes to Computing

In the most recent staff meeting (3/4/11), a new computing committe was discussed to collect ideas on how we could improve the current computing environment in astrophysics (and Physics). Rather than ask for emails, and have to collate them afterwards, it will be considerably easier (for your postdoc reps) if people make suggestions below. Apparently, the scope of these suggestions is not limited.

To add your idea, just type it in the box below and hit "Add comment". If you want to use titles in bold, surround the text with stars, e.g.

As you can see, I've already added some of my own suggestions, But feel free to say the same thing in a slightly different way. You will need to be registered with the Wiki to make a comment; if you're not yet registered (or you with to be anonymous), just email either Ryan or Aprajita with your suggestions and we'll add them here.

More info: The Astro Support Wiki goes some way to informing users what's available, but it's still lacking. We need to have: 1) A list of what inital computing options we have. For example, a windows, linux, mac etc. 2) a list of available software on a webpage, with dates when it was added to the self-service and dates if and when it was removed RyanHoughton 04 May 2011 - 09:52
Option to self-manage: Currently we use a managed system, but each academic is different and often needs different software, environments etc which can be trivial for them to setup if they managed their own system, but can be lengthy and involved if implemented for every other user.
